Understanding Challenging Behaviour: An Information Leaflet for Parents and Carers
Supporting children with behaviour that is challenging can feel overwhelming and confusing for parents and carers. That’s why we’ve developed a clear, accessible leaflet to help explain what challenging behaviour really is and how to respond to it with empathy and understanding. We cover:
What is challenging behaviour?
Challenging behaviour doesn’t always look the same. It might be loud and disruptive, such as shouting or aggression, but it can also be quieter, such as withdrawing, avoiding tasks, or refusing school. However it shows up, this behaviour is often a form of communication. It tells us that something deeper is going on.
Why does it happen?
Every behaviour has a reason. What we see on the surface is only part of the story, underneath, there may be stress, anxiety, sensory overwhelm, or a need that isn’t being met. Our leaflet explores this “iceberg” model briefly and reminds us that behaviour is never just about the behaviour.
How can we help?
There is no one-size-fits-all solution- each child will need an approach tailored to their needs. Our leaflet offers simple, practical strategies to empower children to manage their own feelings and responses over time.
We hope this leaflet gives parents and carers a helpful starting point in understanding and responding to challenging behaviour with curiosity and compassion. If you’d like a copy, please visit the FREE RESOURCES section of our website.
If you would like a deeper dive into Challenging Behaviour and strategies to manage difficult behaviours, we have a dedicated course written and delivered by Educational Psychologist Dr Gary Lavan.
